Salamanca Market (Saturday)
Salamanca Market, Tasmania’s most famous and largest street market, boasts more than 300 stallholders selling craft, souvenirs, gifts, garments, local produce such as cheese, honey, sweet treats, preserves, seasonal fruit and vegetables. A variety of buskers provide live entertainment. The market is located next to the Salamanca Arts Centre, commercial galleries and artisan shops featuring the work of local artists, craftspeople and designers.
Open Saturdays 8am to 3:00pm.
The market is also a short walk to the Tasmanian Museum & Art Gallery (TMAG) and right next door to Parliament House Lawns and St David’s Park, perfect picnic spots for your food stall purchases. Because all that retail therapy is going to make you hungry! Fortunately there are plenty of food stalls in the market and cafes, pubs, and restaurants in surrounding Salamanca, Battery Point and Hobart Waterfront.
PRO TIP 1: Wear your comfortable shoes, the market is HUGE!
PRO TIP 2: Get cash out anywhere else except at the market, BEFORE you arrive. If you do need to find an ATM there is an ATM at the Mercury Building and at the Banjo’s Bakery in Salmanca Place, you will probably have to queue. There is also an ATM at Salamanca Fresh and near Doctor Coffee in the buildings alongside the market.
PRO TIP 3: Parking is difficult but not impossible if you bring plenty of gold coins and read parking signs carefully to avoid fines. We recommend walking, catching public transport or grabbing a taxi if you are staying in the surrounding area.
